Flashcards — IEP Meetings
Card 1 of 18
Can I record the IEP meeting?
tap to reveal
It depends on your state and district rules. Ask ahead in writing, and expect the school may record too.
Am I a member of the IEP team?
tap to reveal
Yes — parents are equal members of the team, not guests. Your knowledge of your child counts as much as anyone's.
After the first IEP, can the school make changes if I don't agree?
tap to reveal
Often yes — after the first IEP, the school can usually move forward after giving you Prior Written Notice. If you disagree, put it in writing and ask about mediation or other dispute options.
What's a good thing to say if you feel rushed?
tap to reveal
Try: 'I need more time to understand this — can we meet again to finish?' You don't have to agree to anything on the spot.
Can I bring someone with me?
tap to reveal
Yes — you can bring a friend, relative, advocate, or anyone who knows your child. Letting the school know ahead is courteous.
Can a team member skip the meeting?
tap to reveal
Only if you agree in writing ahead of time. If someone key won't be there, you can say no or ask for their input in writing.
When should my child attend?
tap to reveal
When it makes sense for them — and they must be invited once transition planning starts. Hearing their own voice helps the team.
What should I bring to an IEP meeting?
tap to reveal
Your concerns letter, the current IEP, recent work samples, any outside reports, and your questions. A notebook for notes helps too.
How often must the IEP be reviewed?
tap to reveal
At least once a year. You can ask for a meeting sooner whenever you have concerns.
Who should be at an IEP meeting?
tap to reveal
You, a general education teacher, a special education teacher, a district representative, and someone who can explain test results. Your child can attend when appropriate.
Do I have to sign the IEP at the meeting?
tap to reveal
No — you can take it home to read first. Ask how long you have and what your signature means in your state.
Can the IEP be changed without a full meeting?
tap to reveal
Yes, if you and the school both agree in writing. You should get a copy of the updated IEP.
Can I ask for an IEP meeting any time?
tap to reveal
Yes — put the request in writing with your reason. If the school says no, ask for that refusal in writing.
What if the meeting time doesn't work for me?
tap to reveal
Schools should try to find a time and place that works for both sides. Phone or video can also be an option.
What if I need an interpreter?
tap to reveal
The school must take steps so you understand the meeting, including an interpreter if you need one. Ask ahead of time.
Why send a follow-up email after the meeting?
tap to reveal
It records what was agreed, for example: 'My understanding is that we agreed to…' Ask them to correct anything wrong.
What is a parent concerns letter?
tap to reveal
A short letter you send before the meeting listing your concerns and requests. Ask that it be attached to the IEP.
Red flag: the IEP is 'already done' when you arrive.
tap to reveal
Schools can bring a draft, but decisions shouldn't be made before you're part of the talk. Say: 'I'd like to treat this as a draft we discuss together.'
